Jaganmohan Palace in Mysore


Jaganmohan Palace is one of the majestic palaces that enhance the glory of the princely state of Mysore. The palace is an outstanding work of architecture that stands testimony to the taste of the erstwhile rulers of Mysore, the Wodeyar Kings.

The beautiful palace had served as the home of the royal family of Mysore from 1897 to 1912. The palace has been witness to many important events in the historyof Mysore. Jaganmohan Palace now acts as an art gallery and a function hall.

History of Jaganmohan Palace

The Jaganmohan Palace was built in 1861 by His Highness Krishnaraja Wodeyar III as a resort for the royal family. The Mysore Palace, which was the original home of the royal family was burnt down in a fire and the construction of a new palace in its place was started in 1897. In the meantime, the Jaganmohan Palace was used by the royals as their home.

Architecture of Jaganmohan Palace

The construction of the Jaganmohan Palace has been done along the lines of traditional Hindu style of architecture and is built over the course of three stories.

An external facade gives way to three entrances where the entablature is embellished with religious carvings and miniature temples.

 Incidentally, it is one of the first known paintings of Mysore Dasara that had been painted using vegetable dyes. A family tree of the Wodeyars is also present within the Jaganmohan Palace, which delves deep into the history of this amazing destination.

Ayachamarajendra Art Gallery


The expanse of the Jaganmohan Palace has a number of priceless artwork and artefacts on display. Exhibits here include weapons of war, musical instruments, sculptures, brassware, antiques coins and currencies.

Some other unique artefacts exhibited here is a French clock which has a mechanism in which a parade of miniature soldiers is displayed every hour and beating drums mark the seconds and a bugle marks the minute.

 Works of eminent artists like Raja Ravi Verma of Tiruvanathouram,  Nikolai Roerich, Svetoslav Roerich and Rabindranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore find a place in Jaganmohan Palace too.

Auditorium


The large auditorium of the Jaganmohan Palace was constructed in the year 1900 and opened to the public in 1980. Since then it is used for staging various cultural events like dance performances, music concerts and festivals, dramas, cultural programs and yearly programs during the Dasara celebrations, etc.

How to Reach Jaganmohan Palace

Jaganmohan Palace is located opposite the City Bus Stand, so you can easily reach this destination by the means of bus. Other than that, you can hail a cab or hire an autorickshaw.

 8.30 AM to 5.30 PM on all days of the week (Tickets issued up to 5 PM)

Entrance Fee: 

Adult – Rs.20.00 and Children (5 to 10 years old) – Rs.10.00
