Raja’s Seat in Coorg

Raja’s Seat or the Seat of the King is a famous sunset point in Madikeri in the Coorg district of Karnataka. It was once the platform from which the kings of Kodagu used to enjoy glorious sunsets.

 The spot got its name as it was the favourite recreational place for the kings. Today it is a famous destination of Madikeri that is visited by tourists throughout the year.

Raja’s seat stands inside a splendid garden of seasonal flowers and musical fountains. The garden becomes a colourful sight when the flowering plants are in full bloom.

The fountains dance to the tune of rhythmic music and gush out colourful water. The sunset point overlooks a valley and offers a spectacular view of green mist-laden mountains beyond the valley.

The attraction at Raja’s Seat, Coorg

Raja’s seat is a small pavilion made of brick and mortar. Four pillars surround it and the pillars are bridged by arches. The structure is built on a high level ground that is enhanced by wonderful surroundings.

It is due to the beauty of the place that the kings of Kodagu preferred spending time with their queens in this lovely ambiance. An added attraction is a toy train.

This lovely train takes adults and children around the park to enjoy a view of the mountains as well as the Raja’s seatfrom a distance.

The best time to visit Raja’s Seat is during the early morning and evening hours. The early morning hour offers a splendid view of the sun rising from behind the mist laden mountains. The golden rays of the setting sun offer a wonderful sight to watch in the evenings.

How to reach Raja’s Seat, Coorg

Raja’s Seat is situated within the town of Madikeri. The place is easily accessible from any part of the town. The place is about 285 kilometres from Bangalore.

By Road

Madikeri is well-connected by road network as it is situated near the Karnataka State Highway 88 that connects Mysore to Mangalore.

 There are several public buses that ply from Madikeri to a number of places in Karnataka and Kerala. Frequent KSRTC buses connect Madikeri to Bangalore, Mysore, Virajpet, etc. The town can also be reached by private vehicles and hired cabs.

By Rail

There is no railway station at Madikeri. The nearest rail stations are located at Hassan, Kasaragod, and Kannur. Mysore and Mangalore are at a distance of 140 km from Madikeri and can be good alternatives to reach Madikeri through the train route.

By Air

The Mysore airport is the closest one to reach Madikeri by air. Mysore is connected to Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hubli, and Dubai via Bangalore. The Mangalore International Airport at Mangalore can also be assessed to reach the town of Madikeri.
